The birth of a baby is usually a time of excitement and joy for a family. However, it is also a time of great change. For some women and families, this change may create stress and difficulty coping. It is not unusual for mothers to experience some unexpected feelings during the early weeks following birth. For one in four women, these feelings may lead to postpartum depression.
The Birth and Postpartum Support Centre has been established to support women and their families through the layers of adjustment and change that come along with pregnancy and the birth of a new baby.
You may find it helpful to ask yourself these questions.
Do you feel alone, sad, and worried?
Are you crying frequently, or extremely irritable?
Do you feel overwhelmed and unable to cope?
Does it seem that you will never feel like yourself again?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be experiencing pregnancy or postpartum depression. Although this likely feels quite scary for you, it is important to know that you are not alone, this is not your fault and help is available. With the right type of support, you can feel like yourself again and enjoy your baby and family.
